“I Felt Listened to”: Evaluating an AI-Powered Reflection Tool for Care Partners

Using AI to strengthen communication between older adults and their care partners

Jazette Johnson, Hira Jamshed, Rachael Zuppke, Amanda Leggett, Emily Mower Provost, and Robin N. Brewer. ““I Felt Listened to”: Evaluating an AI-Powered Reflection Tool for Care Partners.” ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing 18, no. 3 (2025): 1-35.

We designed CareJournal, a voice-powered reflection tool built on Amazon Alexa.

  • Each day, caregivers and older adults answered three short reflection questions about their care experience.
  • Twice a week, they received summaries of these reflections—some written by humans, others generated by AI.
  • They chose which summary to send to their care partner.

We ran two studies:

  • Pilot Study: 14 caregiver/older adult pairs
  • Field Study: 16 caregiver/older adult pairs

CareJournal was used at home for 4 weeks. We logged reflections, generated summaries, and interviewed care partners about their experiences.

1. Prompt Matter
When reflection questions were more open-ended, participants gave richer and more meaningful answers.

2. AI vs Human Summaries
Care partners chose AI and human summaries equally—often they couldn’t tell the difference.
